Title: Unveiling the Hidden Causes Behind Truck Accidents: A Call for Change

In March 2023, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) reported a 4.6% reduction in traffic accidents compared to the same period in 2022. While this news may seem promising, a closer look reveals a concerning trend. Truck and public service vehicle accidents have taken the lead in these incidents, with devastating consequences. This blog delves into the underlying causes of these accidents and calls for a change in how we address this pressing issue.

The Usalama Barabara Campaign an European Union-NTSA collaboration aimed to promote public education and awareness regarding road safety and the preservation of human life through safe road usage and practices. While this initiative has made strides, it has not shone a light on the alarming increase in truck-related accidents.

The unseen challenges faced by truck drivers while blaming them for these accidents is too simplistic. In reality, these long-haul drivers face a myriad of challenges that are often overlooked. Some of them include;

1. Unroadworthy Vehicles: Many truck drivers are forced to operate vehicles that are not roadworthy, putting their lives and the lives of others at risk.

2. Insufficient Fuel Provision: Inadequate fuel provisions can lead drivers to make risky decisions, such as "free-wheeling" to save fuel costs, which is a recipe for speeding accidents.

3. Low Wages and Allowances: Truck drivers often receive minimal compensation, making it difficult to maintain their vehicles or adhere to safety standards.

4. Long Working Hours: The demand for long hours behind the wheel to meet unrealistic deadlines contributes to driver fatigue and impaired judgment.

5. Highway Insecurity: Traveling through certain areas, especially at night, poses significant safety risks, including highway insecurity and encountering dilapidated trucks with broken or no lights.

6. Unachievable Milestones: Setting unattainable targets for drivers encourages reckless behavior and jeopardizes safety.

A call for change is imperative that the authorities and stakeholders take a more comprehensive approach to address the root causes of truck accidents and avoid carnage. The relevant authorities should;

1. Recognize Driver Voices: The transport sector must listen to the concerns of truck drivers, understanding the challenges they face daily. These are the backbone of road transportation anywhere in the world and their voice ought to be a right and not a need.

2. Improve Working Conditions: Employers should prioritize safe and ethical working conditions for drivers, including maintaining roadworthy vehicles, providing adequate fuel, and offering fair wages and allowances.

3. Regulate Working Hours: Strict regulations on working hours should be enforced to prevent driver fatigue and promote road safety.

4. Enhance Security: Measures should be taken to ensure highway security, especially in vulnerable areas, to protect both drivers and cargo.

5. Set Realistic Milestones: Encourage realistic targets for drivers that prioritize safety over speed and efficiency.

In conclusion, the reduction in traffic accidents is a positive development, but the high number of truck accidents demands immediate attention. To truly make our roads safer, we must address the challenges faced by truck drivers and work together to implement lasting solutions. It is only through collective efforts that we can end the tragic loss of lives and property in the transport sector.
